MathCounts Chapter

basics

The Chapter competition of Mathcounts occurs in February when we take our team of eight to Purdue to compete against schools in our area. There are individual and team rounds. The goal for the day is to qualify (either as individuals or as a team) for the State Competition in March.

qualifications

Qualifying for the team is done through the MathCounts School Test, usually given at the end of the MathCounts School Challenges in October. The team generally consists of eight students. After the team has been determined, further testing dictates who is a member of the competing team of four and who takes the test in the role of alternate.

xmt points XMT points are not awarded for participation.

XMT points are awarded for performance as follows:
  • The average score of the contestant and the East Tipp team member placing directly above and directly below the contestant is calculated.
  • For a contestant who has no score above or below his, his own score takes the place of the missing score.
  • The contestant is awarded one XMT point for each point in the average.

As MathCounts is completely a TEAM event at East Tipp, points are awarded as written above to encourage a strong team performance. A perfect score in the individual round is 46.
